“A Practical Beginning to Hellenistic Astrology.”

by Joseph Crane

In the astrological world today, there is far more interest in Hellenistic astrology than there is reliable knowledge about it.  The original writings available in translation can be difficult to understand, and there has been a lack of practical secondary literature for astrologers.

The purpose of this article is to let the reader dip into the Hellenistic tradition to get a sense of its style and to decide whether to include some of it in his or her astrology practice.  We will touch upon some different meanings for houses, different dignities for planets, Lots (sometimes mislabeled “Arabic Parts”), some guidelines for delineating life issues from the natal chart, and a predictive sample.

For purposes of illustration, we will examine the birth chart of Rudy Giuliani, the former New York mayor and leading Presidential aspirant.  Giuliani is known as a colorful, charismatic, and controversial politician.

To apply Hellenistic astrology to his chart, we will begin with a classic make over: we will shed some modern features and add other possibilities that are new and exciting .

Here is his modern chart.

The aspects here are the ones usually called “Ptolemaic”: the opposition, trine, square, and sextile.  (As we will discuss below, a conjunction is not, strictly speaking, an aspect.) We won’t be mentioning the quincunx, semi-square, quintile, or the septile.  The harmonic theory that informed Hellenistic aspects does not include these other possibilities.

Now we strip this chart of what we do not need.

  • Outer planets. I would be a poor modern astrologer if I didn’t note Giuliani’s Sun-Uranus and Mars-Pluto conjunctions, or, perhaps, Neptune on the Ascendant.  However, focusing on these prominent planets too easily takes our attention away from, for example, his Mercury and Venus in Taurus or the relationship between Sun and Saturn.  Let’s start without the outer planets – we can always bring them back later, if we want to.
  • Aspect orbs.  The Hellenistic tradition considers aspects from the relationships between the signs that planets inhabit. Giuliani’s Venus and Mercury, which are with each other in Leo. Taurus, are all in square to his Mars, Jupiter, and Moon, which are with each other in Leo.  Both Sun and Saturn sextile these planets.
  • We use “Whole Sign Houses” Ordinarily we use the lines of the Ascendant-Descendant and MC-IC to form the cusps for the angular houses, and then trisect the resulting four quadrants to make for twelve houses. There is a simpler way: the sign of the First is the entire First house and the degree of the Ascendant is somewhere in the First.  Following the First, the next sign becomes the second house, and so on.  For somebody like Giuliani, with an Ascendant at 29° Virgo, many planets change their houses from a quadrant system.

                        Here is Giuliani’s made-over chart.

In traditional astrology, we always begin by asking questions of the natal chart.  Here are some for Rudy Giuliani’s astrological chart:

  • Can we account for his prominence?
  • What are the leadership qualities that he has manifested during his career?
  • What kind of character is Giuliani?
  • He has had a rather noteworthy personal life. He is currently on his third marriage.  The second one broke up publicly and messily. What dynamics operate here?
  • Can we account for his sudden rise to prominence in the autumn of 2001 and could he become US President in 2008?

To answer these questions we need to analyze the conditions of the planets, relevant Lots, and then look at some predictive indicators.

Since most of our questions are about fame and prominence, we can begin with the planets in his Tenth.

  •
  •

Sun and Saturn

By virtue of its being above the horizon, the Sun’s position tells us that Giuliani’s chart is diurnal.  According to the ancient doctrine of planetary sect, being placed in a diurnal nativity automatically enhances the Sun, Jupiter, and Saturn.  For somebody born at night, with the Sun below the horizon, Moon, Venus, and Mars are enhanced.  Mercury swings both ways.

  • Planetary Sect
  •             A distinguishing feature of Hellenistic astrology is its emphasis on whether the chart is for a daytime or nighttime birth, and how that effects planets.  A daytime or diurnal chart has Sun above the horizon; a nighttime or nocturnal chart has Sun below the horizon.  According to the doctrine of  planetary sect, Sun Jupiter, and Saturn are favored in a diurnal chart; in a nocturnal chart, Moon, Venus, and Mars are favored.
  • Mercury is favored in a diurnal chart when it rises before the Sun,, and, in a nocturnal chart, when it sets after the Sun.
  •  Additionally, the diurnal planets Saturn and Jupiter are enhanced by being on the same side of the horizon as the Sun and in a “masculine” – our fire or air – sign.  The nocturnal planets Moon, Venus, and Mars are favored by being on the other side of the horizon as the Sun and in a “feminine” – earth or water – sign.

Giuliani’s Sun in the Tenth house (or place) can be an indication of prominence, since the Tenth is the place of profession or worldly activity.  Although in modern astrology the Sun is considered one’s “basic energy” or one’s “identity”, in ancient astrology the Sun is the planet of kings and leaders – the one in charge. To get a more complete assessment, however, we would have to look at the planet governing  (dispositing) the Sun in Gemini, Mercury.  We also need to see what planets aspect his Sun.  All the planets in the Twelfth – Mars, Jupiter, and Moon – are in sextile to the Sun by sign or zoidion.  We are particularly interested in the aspect by the malefic, Mars, and the benefic, Jupiter.

But first we need to consider the planet with the Sun: Saturn.

As mentioned above, the Hellenistic tradition didn’t use conjunctions as aspects.  Instead, two planets in the same sign or zoidion are with each other, similar to two people being in the same room.  Each planet conditions each other’s activity.

  • Saturn is identified as a malefic – an “evil doer” – but here it has positive strengths. Saturn is in sect and in the strong Tenth place from the Ascendant.  strong .  Saturn also connects with the Sun by being a dispositor for it – by triplicity, which we will discuss below.
  • Panel
  • Following ancient astrology also means attending to some of its vocabulary:
  • A sign is a zoidion and many signs are zoidia.
  • A planet in its own sign, like Saturn in Capricorn, is like a planet in his own “house”, or oikosFor Virgo rising, Mercury is the “house lord” for the First.  For the sake of clarity we will also use the traditional astrological term “domicile” to denote a “house” of a planet.
  • What we may call a “house”, as in the Seventh being the house of relationships, was a topos or “place.” Therefore, the Tenth is the “place” of one’s career.
  •

I trust that the reader knows the ruling signs – the “houses” or domiciles -- of the planets: that Aries and Scorpio are the houses of Mars, Capricorn and Aquarius the houses of Saturn, and so on. The reader is also familiar with the exaltations and falls (or depressions) of the planets: Sun is exalted in Aries but is in fall in Libra, Mercury is exalted in Virgo (not Aquarius) and is fallen or depressed in Pisces.

In addition to the above familiarities are the triplicities.  We can think of them as a planet being in its own element.

Here’s a table of triplicities, by day and by night.

Sign or Zoidion        Day          Night

159        a       h

37-        j       d

260        f       s

48=        f       g

Sign or Zoidion                           Day                    Night

Aries, Leo, Sagittarius                     Sun                    Jupiter

Gemini, Libra, Aquarius                 Saturn                  Mercury

Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn               Venus                  Moon

Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces                   Venus                 Mars

(This means, for example, that Venus in Taurus is not only in her own house or domicile in Taurus but her own triplicity, as Giuliani’s chart is diurnal and Venus is the diurnal ruler of what we call the signs of the earth element.)

Giuliani’s Saturn is not only in the strong Tenth Place and in sect in his diurnal chart and also in its own triplicity.  Also in Gemini, Sun is in the triplicity of Saturn. Saturn strongly influences the Sun’s leadership potential. In the Tenth, Saturn can say many things about Giuliani’s career   From a Hellenistic point of view, Saturn could hardly be more perfect: its only drawback is that it is occidental, following the Sun, instead of being oriental, ahead of the Sun.

In Hellenistic astrology, the planets that designate career are usually Mars, Venus, and Mercury, but Saturn in the Tenth can also describe career, especially since Saturn is the Moon’s next applying aspect.

Giuliani’s Saturn brings to mind his penchant for law enforcement.  Before becoming mayor of New York City, he was known as a good and tough prosecutor and, in the 1980’s, a U.S. Attorney.  He worked on many high-profile cases against organized crime as well as Wall Street corruption.  He was effective but with a tendency toward overkill (see Mars) and, to his critics, grandstanding.  (Evidently he pioneered the “perp walk”, in which a suspect is displayed in paraded in handcuffs so the press could take photos. )  When Giuliani became mayor of New York, his priorities were reducing crime, “cleaning up” places like Times Square, and making New York City a more livable place.  He was far less effective with education and race relations, which are less Saturnine endeavors.

These dynamics also occur in his response to the tragedy of September 11, 2001, when, in his last months as mayor, Guiliani took on the mantle of tough, effective, and defiant leader.  Adversity can bring out many of his best qualities.

Mercury

When we look at the lord of the Tenth, however, we see Mercury, which is the planet oriental to the Sun – it is the last planet that could be seen rising before sunrise. Because Mercury is oriental, it is also in sect in Giuliani’s diurnal chart.

  •          This condition helps Mercury be a strong vocational indicator for Giuliani. Mercury also has the distinct advantage of being with Venus in her own house or domicile in Taurus.  Venus adds charm, and, to use a modern concept, charisma.

As a vocational indicator, Mercury, among other possibilities, is the planet of politicians,.  Indeed a politician’s activity is communicating and advocating, jockeying for advantage, and periodically convincing others to place him or her into a position of power.  “Politics”, which comes from the Greek polis “ city,” is also about coalitions, compromises, and, more than occasionally, posturing.

Is there something at odds between the planets in the Tenth, projecting confidence and toughness, and those in the Ninth, projecting charm and cleverness? Gemini ( 10th) and Taurus ( 9th) do not have an aspect relationship with one another: Sun and Saturn in Gemini are disconnected from their dispositor, Mercury in Taurus.  This results in these different qualities showing up at different times.  In Giuliani’s case, the tough-guy image, from the 10th house planets is so ingrained that  his milder qualities are not acknowledged, and he has not been able to bring them onto the campaign trail where that could be useful.

First we need to examine those planets that aspect the planets in Gemini and in Taurus – the three planets in the Twelfth.

Three Planets in the 12th

According to traditional astrology, the 12th Place from the Ascendant – the Place of the Bad Spirit -- is not a happy one; it is not the place of dreams and visions (that would be the 9th) but hidden plots, confinements and exiles, and ongoing personal difficulties.  That Giuliani has planets in the Twelfth is not surprising.  His family background included police and fire fighters but also some degree of criminal activity: his father, who ran a tavern, was once sentenced to Sing-Sing for felony assault and robbery. There is sometimes a reciprocal relationship between law enforcement and those who break the law, and one should not be surprised that this would be the case for Rudy Giuliani. Because Giuliani’s chart is diurnal, the triplicity lord for Moon, Mars, and Jupiter is the Sun in the 10th, establishing a further connection between his 12th and 10th places.

Recalling our previous discussion on planetary sect, Jupiter is in sect in his diurnal chart but Moon and Mars are not. In the 12th, however, the great benefic Jupiter can distribute material and psychological bounty, but less abundantly.

Mars, the malefic out of sect in a diurnal chart, is especially problematic in t he Twelfth.  This Mars placement may carry a variety of meanings: emboldened enemies, rash words or deeds, or a tendency to be aggressive or spiteful,

(We will discuss Moon below in the context of Giuliani’s Lot of Spirit.)

We now turn our attention to aspects. Jupiter and Mars in Leo sextile both Sun and Saturn in Gemini and square Mercury and Venus in Taurus.

In Hellenistic astrology the nature of the planet aspecting may be more important than what type of aspect it is.   Unlike modern astrological practice, squares from Jupiter carry Jupiter’s beneficence, but sextiles from Saturn can be difficult.

We also encounter the direction of aspects.  Traditional astrologers sometimes differentiate between a dexter aspect – a planet making an aspect from the right – and a sinister aspect, from the left.  A dexter planet, to the right, is clockwise, in the order of the daily motion, so that a dexter planet would rise before the other planet.  A sinister planet, to the left, is counterclockwise in the order of the signs of the zodiac, and would set after the other planet.

The Hellenistic tradition called a planet to the right looking ahead in the order of the zodiac to the planet to its left, and the planet on its left casts rays back to the planet on the right.

In Giuliani’s chart, Saturn and Sun look ahead to Moon, Mars, and Jupiter, and these three planets cast rays back to them.  Mercury and Venus look ahead to the same three planets, which cast rays back to Mercury and Venus.

The “looking ahead” planets have aspects that are called predominating. The planets to the right are more in charge, and modify those on the left that cast rays. This is especially the case with the squares: here Venus and Mercury directly influence Mars, Moon, and Jupiter.  Were it otherwise, for example, Giuliani would be a politician more frequently overtaken by anger and impulsiveness from a less controllable Mars. Instead, Mars qualities are subordinated to Giuliani’s Venus desire to make a good impression and Mercury’s emphasis on calculation. However, when Mars becomes active during a transit, , planetary period, or circumambulation, instability can erupt. (We will discuss planetary periods and circumambulations below.)

Predomination also allows the Sun and Saturn to have a limiting effect on the planets in the 12th.  We notice that these three planets in Leo are governed by his Sun in the 10th.  Although Giuliani, like John McCain, does best when confronted with an adversary, whether it’s democrats, terrorists, or New York’s petty criminals, he projects as somebody competent and in control, although he is clearly excited by political combat.  The Sun’s role is that much of this takes place on a very public stage.

What role does Jupiter have?  With Mars in accompaniment, Giuliani can take on the role of crusader although perhaps not destined to be a great one, because of a tendency to come on too strongly or to be ruthless (Mars). Furthermore, Jupiter is in sect but is weakened by being in the 12th and, to a lesser extent, by its being occidental. As mayor of New York City, he was known as the “morality czar” for waging war against vice and petty criminality that was plaguing New York at the time, yet his personal life was less than righteous. His crime-fighting stance may be more his desire to play out a natural role as the tough politician who enjoys being on the attack when the opponent is well defined, than from firmly held moral positions.

Lots of Fortune, Spirit, Necessity, Eros

Centuries before there were “Arabic parts” there were the Hellenistic lots.

All lots or parts are derived positions: you take the distance from one position to a second position and add that number to a third, usually the Ascendant. For example, the Lot of Fortune, sometimes just called “the Lot”, takes the number of degrees from the Sun to the Moon in a daytime chart and adds that to the Ascendant.  (For a nighttime chart, one takes the distance from the Moon to the Sun and adds that to the Ascendant.)  For Rudy Giuliani, the distance in the zodiac between Sun at 7°16’ Gemini and Moon at 23°50’ Leo is 76°34’ -- take this distance and add it to an Ascendant at 29°’48 Virgo and we get a Lot of Fortune at 16°21’ Sagittarius.

  • The formulas in the panel will give us the same results.

  •

The Lot of Fortune is like the Wheel of Fortune – it depicts conditions particularly subject to life’s vicissitudes – money and fame, overall happiness based on external conditions, and is a secondary indicator for health.

Giuliani’s Lot of Fortune in Sagittarius is in the 4th place.  Its ruler, Jupiter in the 12th, bestows the benefits and difficulties mentioned above; its saving grace is Jupiter’s trine relationship to the Lot.  Saturn opposing the Lot could be a source of difficulty, except Saturn’s position is advantageous to him: Giuliani has tended to derive his luck from determination and a love for hard work, as befitting the testimony of an well placed Saturn.

The Lot of Spirit is reciprocal to the Lot of Fortune: both lots are always an

  • equal distance from the Ascendant in opposite directions.   For the Lot  of Spirit, one calculates the distance from the Moon to the Sun, then adds the distance to the Ascendant.  (For a nocturnal chart the luminaries reverse.)

The Lot of Spirit depicts personal invention and initiative in life – how do you create your own opportunities and success?  If the Lot of Fortune is a mundane indicator, the Lot of Spirit is a more psychological one.

Giuliani’s Lot of Spirit is in Cancer. The sign or zoidion of this Lot does not aspect the Sun and Saturn in Gemini or the three planets in Leo but it does aspect Mercury and Venus in Taurus . Venus, being in her own house or domicile (Taurus), and with Mercury governed by her, can help matters.  Venus’ sign in aspect to  that of the Lot of Spirit also gives him some charisma.

It is Moon in Leo governing the Lot of Spirit, however, that has final say in the matter: with Mars and Jupiter, governing Moon is surrounded by machismo and/or arrogance.  There are other problems: (1) there is no aspect between the Lot of Spirit in Cancer and the Moon in Leo, and (2) Moon is, of course, in the 12th.  They present different kinds of difficulties: aversion between a Lot and it ruler can make related matters ungovernable; and the ruler of the Lot of Spirit in the 12th from the Ascendant can show a tendency toward self-destructiveness.  Both factors were in evidence in Giuliani’s time as mayor of New York.  As a presidential candidate they may have already manifested.

Two other Lots I consider here are the Lots of Eros and Necessity.  In a version I will use here, they are derived from the distances between Fortune and Spirit, and their formulas do not reverse by night

For the Lot of Necessity I use the distance from Fortune to Spirit, add that to the degree of the Ascendant (AS + Spirit – Fortune) For Giuliani, we arrive at Aries, governed by Mars in Leo.  Here we see, one again, Giuliani’s ability to come out fighting in circumstances of adversity.

  • The Lot of Eros, reciprocal to the Lot of Necessity, takes the distance from Spirit to Fortune and adds that to the Ascendant (ASC + Fortune – Spirit).
  • This Lot, more about friendship than erotic love, falls in Pisces in the 7th, governed by Jupiter.  The rulers of both Lots of Eros and Necessity (Mars) fall in his 12th.

For the Lot of Necessity, we have the Lot aspecting its lord (Mars) and with a benefic (Jupiter). For the Lot of Eros, we do not have the Lot aspecting its lord, as Pisces does not aspect Leo, and with a malefic.[re-written version from this is much better] One could say that Giuliani is a street fighter without natural allies.  This brings us to the topic of relationship.

Venus and Lot of Marriage

Rudy Giuliani’s personal life is rather well known.  The interested reader can consult any biography – except his current campaign material – for detailed information . Giuliani has had many marriages, sometimes with overlapping affairs, and endured an acrimonious and spectacularly public break-up of his second marriage in 2000 as he was preparing a run for US Senate.

  •             Looking again at his Venus, we encounter another factor: being eight degrees from the Sun, Venus is hidden in the Sun’s beams.  According to Hellenistic doctrine, a planet in this condition – within fifteen degrees of the Sun -- is weaker than it otherwise would be and could manifest in a distorted or inconsistent way.  (The later doctrine of “combustion,” whereby a planet is further debilitated by being within eight degrees of the Sun, does not appear in the Hellenistic tradition, to my knowledge.)
  • Being within the Sun’s beams weakens an otherwise dignified Venus, giving a strong hint of instability or unpredictability. This doesn’t appear to inhibit his charm, however.  Since Venus is testified to (aspected) by Jupiter and Mars in the Twelfth, again we note an aggressive and adventurous nature that can be given to impulsiveness.

Now we can look at Giuliani’s Lot of Marriage.  I use the one I’ve seen the most, which is derived from the distance going from Saturn to Venus for a man, from Venus in Taurus to Saturn for a woman, adding the distance to the Ascendant. (The formula is AS + Venus – Saturn for a man, AS + Saturn – Venus for a woman.) Going from Saturn in Gemini to Venus at the last degree of Taurus is almost completely around the zodiac. The Lot of Marriage falls in Virgo, earlier in the zodiac than the Ascendant, also governed by Mercury.

  • Here, once again, we are confronted by strong oriental Mercury, which is with Venus and testified to by Mars and Jupiter.  In the 1st with the Ascendant, this Lot is placed fortunately and shows decisiveness.  The testimony by Mars and Jupiter in the 12th, however, indicate a tendency to extreme (and possibly self-destructive) emotions and behavior in the sphere  of relationships and marriage.

Hellenistic Prediction

There are many different Hellenistic methods of prediction and applying all of them to Giuliani would too lengthy for our purposes here.  Instead, we’ll look at three techniques and two times of his life: the period around September 11, 2001, and the year 2008, the year of a presidential election.

  •             The first technique uses planetary periods or chronocrators, similar to the dasha/bukhti system in Vedic astrology. One planet, called the general time lord, governs for many years, within which planets rotate being specific planetary time lords.  Within a specific period, the planets rotate for even smaller amounts of time as particular time lords.
  • The second technique uses circumambulations, which direct a planet an average of a degree a year.  (Circumambulations are the beginning of modern systems of progressions and directions.)

Using Giulini’s chart, we begin in late 2001 with the method of decennials, an ancient planetary period system for which there is ample documentation.

The general periods for this system are all ten years and nine months long.

The first planetary lord or chronocrator is usually the Sun in a day chart and the Moon in a night chart. and then proceeds through life in the order of the planets following the luminary through the zodiac.   For Giuliani, the sequence begins with Sun, followed by Saturn, Mars, Jupiter, Moon, Mercury, and Venus.  This is the order of the planets following the Sun through the zodiac.

The specific periods follow the same rotation of planets in the chart, now divided into months.  You may ask, “how many months”?  A specific period lasts as many months as the number of the planet who is the specific chronocrator or time lord.

Here is a good list to memorize: the numbers of the planets.  For decennials, we use these numbers to indicate months and days.  Here they are in the order they appear in Giulini’s chart.

Sun: 19

  • Saturn: 30

Mars: 15

  •

Jupiter: 12

Moon: 25.

  • Mercury: 20.

Venus: 8

  •

(Before taking out our scratch pad and pencil, I should mention that according to most presentations of Decennials each year is 360, not 365 .25 days.  This has the advantage of giving us uniform thirty-day months for specific periods, but does give us some extra calculation to do.)

Back to Rudy Giuliani: a general period governed by Mercury began in mid-1997 and would last until the end of 2007.  For September 11, 2001, the specific planetary lord was Saturn, dominant in his chart in the Tenth, the place of career.  This befits his defiant image of toughness, that to some was heroic to others posturing, that he presented during this time.  This was certainly a Saturn period for him, as there was no end to the difficulties he faced at this time.  But because Saturn is well positioned in his chart, this turned out to be a fine time for him: it restored his depleted reputation and launched him onto a national stage.

For decennials, there is a third level of planetary lordship that we call particular periods.  One formulation has faster-moving uniform periods of 129 days, giving the number of days that are the same as the numbers of the planets: Saturn is always 30 days, Jupiter is always 12, etc..

  • For the early autumn of 2001, Mercury was the general lord, Saturn the particular lord, and – you guessed it – Mars was the particular lord.  This would have worked against him, because of the difficulty of Mars’ natal position, except that events conveniently gave him an enemy: with terrorists as a new threat, Giuliani was once again in his element.

Venus has been his general chronocrator since the end of 2007.  As mentioned above, Venus is in dignity but has some other difficulties, notably a square from a difficult Mars and being under the Sun’s beams.  More important is that his specific planetary lord at this time is also Venus. . However, beginning in June and continuing into Spring 2010 , Sun becomes his specific lord.. .  As a planet of leadership and prominent in his chart, it does give Giuliani an advantage: it may point to political success during that time.

Before jumping to conclusions, however, we should look at another predictive system – circumambulations, the forerunner of primary directions.

This method directs a planet through a sign at a rate based upon the time it takes that sign to ascend at the latitude of birth.  In the Northern Hemisphere, for example, Pisces and Aries take the shortest time to rise and opposite signs Virgo and Libra take the most time to ascend.  Therefore the progress of any position will be fastest when going through Pisces and Aries, slowest when going through Virgo and Libra.

One usually directs the Ascendant, Midheaven degree, Sun, Moon, and Lot of Fortune. When these directed positions aspect a natal position, the aspected natal position becomes a time lord for matters related to the position directed.

In August 2001, Giuliani’s directed Sun reached the eighth degree of Cancer and formed a sextile to natal Venus..   The Sun signifies matters of leadership and authority; Venus, the planetary lord for matters of the Sun would display Giuliani as popular and well-liked .  After September 11, 2001, Giuliani’s popularity among New Yorkers – and many Americans – soared to record levels.  This was during a time of adversity.

In January 2007, before announcing for president, his directed Sun was conjunct natal Mars; this will last until the autumn of 2011. This does befit somebody entering a campaign, but Mars’ difficulties in Giuliani’s natal chart do not portend well for him.  Interestingly, in 2011 Sun takes over, as the Sun’s direction sextiles his natal Sun position.

Directing the Midheaven degree by circumambulation, there’s a conjunction with Jupiter in November 2005.  Directing the Ascendant, there is a square to natal Jupiter in March 2008.

A final look at Jupiter gives us an indication of mixed success. Although the great benefic is in sect, Jupiter is in the Twelfth, occidental, and keeping company with a potentially nasty Mars.  Governing Jupiter, fortunately, is a strong Sun in Gemini in the Tenth that is well regulated by Saturn.

Using these few predictive methods, one could surmise that Giuliani indeed can do well as a presidential candidate and quite possibly be his party’s nominee.  If I was advising his campaign, I would warn against overreaching or being overaggressive (Jupiter with Mars) and to watch out for those proverbial skeletons in the closet (Twelfth Place) and that a focused and disciplined organization (Sun and Saturn testifying to Jupiter) may bring about his best chances.  However, based on some of Jupiter’s problems in Giuliani’s natal chart, I have doubts about an eventual victory and his becoming US President.

The Lot of Necessity uses the distance between Fortune and Mercury by day.  They both reverse for nocturnal births. See Crane, 2007, p. 107-109.
